初中三年級的重點考核內容之一——過去完成時，其結構「had+動詞的過去分詞」。
一般來講，當句子中有by the time時，在初中階段的考試中，只要選「過去完成時」的句子一般都對。
「had+動詞的過去分詞」所表示的動作，發生在「by the time（到......時間為止）」所提到的時間點之前。這個是衡量是否用「had+動詞的過去分詞」結構的關鍵。
例：by the time we came to the stop, the bus had left.（請問是我們先came的，還是bus先「had left」的，顯然是車先離開，所以在表示「兩個過去的動作，一前一後發生的時候，離現在更遠一些的那個動作就用的是「過去完成時」）。
